This is an interactive, workshop-based course suitable for new writers seeking publication in the non-fiction magazine market, or those who’ve perhaps had a couple of pieces published and would like to build upon their success.

We’ll explore how to make your ideas more marketable, how to analyse a publication’s readership, to twist your idea to interest them, and then how to structure your article. Finally, we’ll create a pitch to sell your idea to the editor, and get that commission, before you write your feature. Each workshop will offer an opportunity to put into practice the skills learned, either on an individual or group basis.

Course Breakdown

This course is for any writer of any skill level. It’s designed to help you gain an understanding of writing for the magazine market, and how to improve your chances of selling your ideas to editors.

Session 1: Idea Analysis

From where do we get our ideas? What makes a good article idea? How do you turn one idea into six, or more? Competition: who can find the most ideas in ten minutes?

Session 2: Market Analysis

First we’ll look at how to analyse a magazine, and then in groups we’ll analyse a couple of similar magazines to learn how the readerships differ and what this means for the article writer.

Session 3: Structure Analysis

How do you structure an article? We’ll explore the multitude of middles, the breadth of beginnings and the endless possibilities for endings.  Then we’ll work out which structure is right for your article idea.

Session 4: Pitch Analysis.

Sell your idea first, then write the article. How? You pitch it. We’ll discover the art of pitching to help you secure your next article sale. And you’ll have a go at drafting a pitch.
