If you haven’t come across it before, Readly is a fantastic resource for writers. It’s an online magazine store. For £7.99 a month you can access thousands of magazines (and their back issues) and view them on several devices at the same time.
Most of the magazines are the full issues that you might buy at the newsagents. I’ve only come across one that was a ‘scaled down’ or ‘lite’ version, and basically that meant there were no adverts. There are no limits to the number of magazines you can look at/read each month, or store on your device (except any limitations caused by the amount of memory on your device). Downloaded issues are accessible while you have a subscription.
What I like about it are the vast array of magazines available (over 2200 of them), from a variety of countries (yes, you can research foreign markets right from your tablet/computer/smartphone). It’s perfect for market research purposes.
Running until 31st August, Readly are offering a month’s free trial via this link, and you’ll also be entered into a competition to win an iPad (as will I … just to be clear… if you go on to take out a paid subscription).
I also like the search option. You can search for specific titles (note – not every magazine is available on here, but there are a good many that are) – and you can also search for your name. So, want to find out if that readers’ letter you submitted was published? Search for your name. Want to know if your article was published? Search for your name. (I’ve even found some of my photographs that have been published in magazines by doing this sort of search!)
If you’re not sure how useful Readly might be, take up the offer of a month’s free trial. Explore what’s available. If you don’t like it, simply cancel your subscription. But if you do – for the price of two monthly print magazines you could have access to other 2,200 from all over the world.
